CALA Arts Page

Mission Statement

We empower students of all backgrounds to express themselves and uplift their communities through visual arts. Our students utilize various mediums in order to practice creative problem solving, community building, leadership and simply enjoy making art. By exploring culturally relevant artwork, students reflect on their identities and challenge the status quo. We co-create safe and inviting spaces for growth where students of all artistic abilities feel welcome and supported in taking risks. Our vision is for students to boldly use their voices, be proud of who they are and have agency in the classroom and beyond.

We teach our students to:

Create, analyze, and interpret art through practice and application of the 8 Studio Habits of Mind (Critical Thinking)
Take risks and experiment with new skills in order to grow as individuals (Self Determination)
Effectively communicate and express themselves through visual literacy (Leadership)
Highlight underrepresented stories to foster cross-cultural solidarity and pride (Knowledge and Love of Self and Land)
Understand the role art has in changing, challenging and uplifting our diverse global community (Criticality and Collectivism)

Artwork of the Month

Each month, several students from each period are chosen for Artwork of the Month. These are students who demonstrated CAL Graduate Skills (Self-Determination, Criticality, Knowledge of Self and Land, Critical Thinking, Collectivism, and Leadership) while completing their artwork. These students get their artwork featured on the website as well as hung up on campus.
